Retrocasting

1 relationship phrase 6 tags 4 categories

Retrocasting means working backward from an imagined future to narrate how it plausibly came to be, treating that future as history and reverse-engineering its causes. The term is used informally in design and foresight writing and has no single, fixed coinage.

Jewish futurist reframe: Mirrors the midrashic habit of narrating backward from a known ending. It asks “how did we get here?” of Sinai or redemption. In this framing, prophecy and memory become the same muscle.

Coined by Mike Wirth, Jewish futurist and design educator.
