Anshie Kagan is a Chicago-based Jewish pop artist whose work runs across a multitude of Jewish people, objects, and ideas, rendering rebbes and gedolim in Warhol color and recasting the Ten Commandments as scannable QR codes. In this episode, Mike Wirth talks with Anshie about his path from an Orthodox upbringing between Boston and Lakewood, NJ into fine art, the mechanics and ethics of image appropriation, where that technique surfaces across Jewish art history, and which Jewish artists Anshie himself looks to. The two also reflect on a decade-long friendship that started on Instagram and grew through mural fests and street art projects, and how that shared history shapes the way they each show up as Jews and as creatives.
